Vulcana™ products are made from discarded car tires that come from American landfills. The tires are devulcanized (i.e., ground so finely that the carbon molecules are actually broken), compounded (or mixed) with natural rubber at a compounding facility and cured as sheet rubber alone or with hemp in the U.S.A (curing means applying heat and pressure so that the rubber retains its shape – it starts out feeling like chewing gum). Finally, the products are assembled and stitched, primarily in America, where manufacturing jobs are being lost at a seemingly unending rate. The hemp (a very eco-friendly material which requires no pesticides to grow and actually improves the soil in which it grows) does come from Romania, since it is illegal to grow it in the United States. No one rubber company handles every aspect of turning discarded car tires into Vulcana™ sheet rubber. The process is highly technical and carried out very carefully in discrete stages. Because several companies are involved there are added shipping costs. We continue to work on the production and distribution process to allow for more economical solutions for the delivery of quality eco-trashion products. Vulcana™ products are made according to fair labor practices. That’s why we say Vulcana™ products are people-friendly in addition to being Earth-friendly and animal-friendly.
